CONQUEZ EdEX Mechanism

At the heart of CONQUEZ EdEX is an education management think-tank that researches and builds ground-breaking models of education design, delivery and ecosystem management. EdEX solutions teams draw from this knowledge bank to create business- and operational excellence solutions for institutions.

All of just 8 years, Mexico’s Encarta University was an ambitious self-funded project built at the eastern outskirts of Mexico City. 1800 and odd students; 100+ teachers, and around 200 staffers made Encarta a happening place spread over 150 acres. It ran six undergrad and three Master’s programs, and a few diploma programs in some areas of engineering & information technology. The trouble was that the university was planned for 3500+ students, and for the last three years, the numbers were dwindling. The investors were finally getting jittery. They saw nothing on the horizon which would turn the university into a profitable venture. They were more worried about getting the venture earn enough to sustain itself first. In dollar terms, the gap stood at 7 million in 2017. The university had managed just about 5 USD million of the 12 million it should be making. When CONQUEZ consultants studied and analyzed Encarta, two facts stood out clear: one, even in best case scenario, the university would need at least three years more to get on its feet. That meant raising at least USD 15 million for the next three years to keep the university going – assuming it would make 15 million on its own through fees and interests. The second was more important; the university need to expand its base wide enough not only to touch the magic figure of 4000 students; but to actually have another about 2000 learners spread out across the country.
In our proposal, we specified a 3-pronged strategy for Encarta: build international alliances to lend credibility; introduce new learning and qualification products in high-demand industry areas like global certifications; short-term summer programs etc.; and build the university into a hub of talent, research and training for the local industry and business. We’ve drawn a detailed 10 year business plan for Encarta promoters to hit the PE and venture funding circuit for raising the next round of funding for the university. We can sense an air of hope among the top management. The talent shortage in Mexican industry is already an opportunity for well-managed institutions. We are also working on a strategy for them to help them raise some funds through grant-in-aid from the Mexican government and UN bodies.Read More
